A Little Bit of Rust
A brick pier had the benefit of 3 structural engineers looking at it; the first missed the secret hidden behind the crack; the second engineer removed a brick and correctly deduced a steel column hidden behind the brickwork, however, misjudged its size and recommended the building was propped up while the column was replaced. Elmstone Design LLP were the third Structural Engineer called on because of the costs of replacing the column. We removed two bricks and determined the actual column size and extent of corrosion and prepared a scheme to strengthen the column, amending the weathering details to prevent future corrosion at a fraction of the original estimate.
